Protecting children from potential harm: Our tax dollars at work.

Daily our children take fields trips. As parents we worry about the buses they ride in. We worry about the food they will be eating. We worry about the class bully. But do you worry that your children may be visiting a place where men are found carrying assault rifles and over 100 rounds of ammunition?

Our beloved children take field trips to The Wind Wolves Preserve.
The Wind Wolves Preserve
is a place of spectacular beauty. An environment enriched with wildlife and plant splendor. The Preserve is a place of peace, inspiration and tranquility.

However that tranquility was interrupted yesterday. On October 14, 2008, a beautiful autumn day here in Kern County.
The Sheriff’s Department
was called to the Preserve. They found two men, backpacks and artillery. Two military style back packs, a .22 cal rifle, two AR15 assault rifles and a Glock .40 cal handgun. Additionally, over 100 rounds of ammunition, miscellaneous food items and extra clothing were also found in the back packs. The subjects told law enforcement they were out hiking and looking for a place to shoot in the mountain area. The two men are in custody as the investigation continues.
Bakersfield.com has also reported the story.

Being the person I am I always try to find the good. Believing in the second amendment, “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed”. Maybe these men were in fact going for a hike. But they were trespassing. Additionally, it’s my understanding a convicted felons right to bear Arms will be revoked. From the story it appears one of the suspects is a felon.

I’m thankful for the Sheriff’s Department acting on this. I love seeing my tax dollars being spent wisely. Our tax dollars being spent to protect us from potentially ill harm. Thank you for protecting us and our children! We all have a responsibility to protect our children. And to protect others from any heinous acts. It frightens me as a parent of all the “what ifs” out there.

That's wild. Sounds like a big fine for those guys. Rural areas you always have to be wary of gun toters who are out shooting at targets, squirrels, etc...

How crazy! I'm glad the Sheriffs took care of things. Like a lot of moms, I'm a bit overprotective of my babygirl (in 1st grade). I always think twice before signing permission forms for field trips anywhere.

I guess the adage of you can never be too careful is the truth!

I agree that we are lucky that the men from the preserve were the but with out the sheriffs their would have been no where for them to take them. those men are locked up now being watched by sheriffs. I think it is unfair of you to say they would have never been caught.

Who knows the exact specific details. From the story it appears the men were initially found without the backpack/arsenal. Maybe they ditched the bag and it was recovered. Thus, both were unarmed. The men detained and the people from the preserve. I would agree with both Tiffany and Kay. I think the people on the preserve did a wonderful public/community service being alert and doing what needed to be done. I also appreciate the due diligence of the sheriff's department.

Thought you'd might like to spread this info around....Let the CTA know how much of a mistake they made.

Students, teachers and parents are going to take action regarding Proposition 8 on the same day... Tuesday, October 21st. This story about the California Teachers Association ("CTA") donating $1 Million to preserve same-sex marriage made many people ill. I found this story on www.beetlebabee.wordpress.com
